Jean Craig Jones and Allan Jones
Long time Hampton resident Allan Jones met Philadelphia native, Jean Craig as students at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia in the 1940’s. They married and returned to Hampton around 1942, where they lived, painted and taught art for over sixty years. Allan Jones passed away in 1989, but Jean Craig Jones still lives and maintains her studio in the Olde Wythe neighborhood of Hampton.
Both artists are represented in the collections of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, Hollins College, Longwood College, Washington and Lee University, and many others.
This exhibition of over 100 works spans their artistic careers over sixty years from their student days till now and includes Jean’s latest oeuvre of paper cutouts. Works in the exhibition include drawings, dry brush drawings, watercolors, oils and acrylics and sculpture drawn from the collections of Jean Craig, her family and prominent peninsula collectors. Also on view will be intimate family objects such as the artist’s paint boxes, easels, palettes, sketchbooks, journals, favorite still life objects and personal photographs.
