Legacy and Stories
Legacy and Stories is an exhibition of Hampton artists who use their creative medium to present narratives, accounts, and anecdotes which are historical, biographical, or autobiographical in nature. Some works in this exhibition are very personal while others tell more universal stories – some familiar, some new.
“The Charles H. Taylor Visual Arts Center is proud to organize an exhibition that exemplifies the voices of local, African-American artists. Our mission at Hampton Arts is to promote a deeper cultural awareness, and this anniversary event educates citizens of that narrative using a variety of visual mediums,” said Hampton Arts Artistic Director Richard M. Parison, Jr.
“Legacy and Stories features the work of J.J. Moore, Jackie Merritt, Anthony Hurt, Sherman Watkins, and Steve Prince. J.J. Moore’s carved wood dioramas depict stirring scenes that have shaped African American, American history and culture. Anthony Hurt’s work tells of his early life living in Prince Edward County. 
Jackie Merritt brings personal stories to life in her drawings and music. Sherman Watkins presents a “Kaleidoscope of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.” And also on display is Steve Prince’s 40 foot wood-block carving called Communal Resurrection: Song for Aya,” said Visual Arts Center Manager Jennifer Morningstar.
The Artist Reception on August 24 will feature music and hands-on storytelling activities for the public. Legacy and Stories is a very special and important exhibition to begin our 2019-2020 Visual Arts Center Season.
The Charles H. Taylor Visual Arts Center will host “Legacy and Stories” from July 30, 2019 through September 14, 2019.
