Meet Our Instructors: Jerry Gammon
Hampton resident Jerry Gammon picked up a camera in 1995 and never looked back! Read about his interest in photography and his connection to The Charles H. Taylor Visual Arts Center.
- What is your favorite art medium and why?
- Photography. I love the challenge of looking at ordinary things and places around me and trying to capture them in a new and interesting way. "Make the ordinary look extraordinary" is my goal. Also, photography captures the now, so the future can see the past.
- What is something most people don’t know about photography?
- Most people do not realize how easy it is to take great photos with a modern camera. In the digital age, cameras are so good that great images can be made shooting in the "auto" modes.

- Why do you like teaching and why is it important?
- Most people who are taking a photography class want to learn how to use their camera so they can take better images. It is my goal to help them build a foundation upon which they can build by taking more classes, do online tutorials and other self-study. The more you learn, the better your pictures will become and the more you will enjoy the hobby.
- What is the best interaction you’ve encountered with a student?
- Several students fit this response. They come to the first class eager and ready to learn. They fully participate in class and you are able to see the instant improvement in their quality of work as they continue to grow as a photographer.

- What is your favorite exhibition at The Charles H. Taylor Visual Arts Center?
- By far, the annual Members Show. It has a great variety of work from some who will not enter the other exhibits throughout the year.
- What makes CHTVAC unique?
- The Center is unique in that is a constant source of displayed art, year around, mostly by local artists. It also offers a variety of classes that are fun and affordable.
- If you took a class (that wasn’t your own) which would you try?
- Would love to take a painting class with James Warwick Jones.
- Who is an artist/photographer that inspires you?
- From the past, Van Gogh. Contemporaries locally would include Jim Hansen, Will King and many shooters in my camera club. Through books and media, I enjoy Trey Ratliff, Bryan Peterson and Jay Maisel.
