Small Works is on display now!

Fishing Gear by Bob Carlson.pngWhile much of the most famous works of art catch our attention due to their grandiosity, the Small Works Exhibition is here to paint a different picture – a miniature one! Artists from around the region and around the Commonwealth are invited to submit miniature and small artworks. Artworks in all media are represented, and the exhibition presents a wide range of styles, techniques, content, imagery and intent. Small two-dimensional works are required to be no larger than 80 square inches and small three dimensional works are required to be no larger than 10 inches on any side. Wonderful things do come in small packages – and they make amazing holiday gifts!Cocobolo Finial Vessel by Cliff Guard.png

Taylor Arts Center’s 2013 Miniatures and Small Works exhibition. Wentz is a Signature Member of the American Watercolor Society.

Winter Vision by Elisabeth Drewry.pngJudge’s statement: Hampton Roads artists have created an overwhelming number of very high-quality miniature and small works in a wide range of media and styles. Miniature painting has a long history in art dating back to 13th century Persia and 15th century medieval illuminated manuscripts. It is a popular form today with many annual regional exhibitions and international societies. Size limitations create significant and specific artistic challenges. Larger works can attract and produce an impact simply by their presence. Smaller works must draw you in, and then hold your attention. Two-dimensional miniature works must be 20 square inches or less, and three-dimensional works less than 5 inches cubed. In the small works category, two-dimensional works are required to be no larger than 80 square inches, unframed, and three-dimensional art no larger than 10 inches on each side. Forest Story by Ellen DeMaria.pngI viewed each entry carefully and thoughtfully with delight and appreciation several times. Visually arresting works made me stop, think, feel, remember or see in a new way. Meaning in art can be interpreted by each viewer and the artist in very different ways depending on our experiences, education and interests. Artists have the gift and responsibility to make art personal by interpreting, not just recording. In addition to impact and content, it is essential to utilize skill and competence in the use of materials and in the elements and principles of design. I congratulate each artist for bravely subjecting your unique, personal creations to be judged.  I am so impressed with your passion, intelligence, imagination and energy which creates this excellent exhibition. I am honored to be your judge.
